Hajia Falmata Mani

Introduction

Hajia Falmata Mani was born on 20 November 1946 in Yituwa Ward, Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State, Nigeria, into the family of Alhaji Mallam Moguma and Hajiya Yakaka Kime. She was a distinguished farmer, entrepreneur, public servant and community leader whose life was defined by integrity, hard work, resilience, compassion, self-reliance and service.

Throughout her life she showed that determination, education, courage and enterprise can open doors for families and communities.

Early life and education

She began school in Abadam and continued at the then Provincial Girls School, Maiduguri. After her early education she joined the Social Welfare Department of the defunct Borno Native Authority as a Social Welfare Officer, working with vulnerable individuals and families.

Her performance earned a scholarship to study in Manchester, England. She was reported as the first Kanuri woman afforded that opportunity — a milestone for women in the Kanuri community and in Borno State.

Banking career

On return from England she joined Union Bank. Through discipline and integrity she rose to “B” Signatory. The work gave her a practical grounding in administration, accountability and organisational leadership.

Entrepreneurship and agriculture

She later left banking to build her own enterprises. Agriculture was her main investment, supported by general contracting and related commercial work. She invested substantially in farming and became one of the notable women farmer-entrepreneurs of her generation in Borno State.

Fani Nigeria Limited

Her entrepreneurial legacy includes the establishment of Fani Nigeria Limited — part of the family’s continuing commitment to enterprise and service. The company remains a construction and engineering practice headquartered in Maiduguri, with presence in Abuja.
